一九七七年，史蒂芬史匹柏的科幻经典第三类接触描述友善和平的外星人尝试和地球人接触，在票房和评论都获得了相当的成功。于是他再接再厉，在一九八二年拍出了他的童年梦想：E.T.外星人，描述纯真无邪善良但外貌怪异的外星人由于意料之外而滞留在美国某个小镇的郊区，因而结识了一位地球小孩子的感人故事。
电影推出之后，感动了全世界的大人和孩子，票房纪录高居影史前十名十多年，2002年还在全美戏院重新上映廿周年的纪念版。片尾外星人和小孩子道别时，心像灯一样亮了起来，这幅动人的画面给了美国歌手尼尔戴门一个想法，写出了这首Heartlight。
